A little bit about me

Hi! I am Lubna. I'm currently a PhD student at the University of Exeter, where my research focuses on microtubule formation during mitosis. I’ve always been fascinated by the life sciences, and over the years, that interest has evolved into a passion for both research and education. Alongside my academic work, I’ve had the chance to support undergraduate teaching in the lab — something I genuinely enjoy, especially when I see students have those “aha” moments. Outside the lab, I’m someone who loves learning new things — whether that’s trying out drawing skills with my daughters or experimenting with recipes in the kitchen (with mixed results, I’ll admit!). Cooking has become my go-to way to unwind after long days of reading papers or troubleshooting experiments.

How did I hear about LearnSci?

As part of my PhD programme, I was required to complete a placement, so I began looking for opportunities that aligned with my interests in science education and digital learning. During this search, I had a conversation with a senior PhD student who had previously come across LearnSci and spoke very highly of their work. After looking into LearnSci myself, I was really impressed by their approach to interactive learning, and I knew it would be a great fit for what I was hoping to get out of a placement.

What did I achieve during my internship?

During my three-month internship, I had the opportunity to design an interactive Smart Worksheet focused on cell culture — a topic I’m both familiar with and passionate about. The process involved not only creating the scientific content and learning flow but also gaining new technical skills, including learning how to code to bring the worksheet to life. It was incredibly rewarding to develop a resource that could help students grasp complex procedures in a more interactive and self-paced way.

What was it like working alongside the LearnSci team?

The LearnSci team were fantastic to work with — welcoming, collaborative, and genuinely passionate about education. I felt valued from the start, and there was a strong sense of shared purpose across the whole team. Everyone was open to ideas, quick to offer support, and enthusiastic about the work we were doing. It was inspiring to be part of a group that combines scientific expertise with creativity and a deep understanding of how students learn. The experience not only enhanced my skills but also gave me new perspectives on how digital tools can support teaching in higher education.
