LearnSci’s ten new clinical biomedical science Smart Worksheets have been developed in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), academics and biomedical scientists. The new sheets expand our library across clinical biochemistry, immunology and genetics.
The new sheets are designed to support educators with a central challenge in biomedical science education: helping students move beyond acquiring subject knowledge to develop the analytical, interpretive and problem-solving skills required in professional practice. Across the worksheets, students apply their knowledge to realistic laboratory data and patient scenarios, while the flexibility of the resources allows these skills to be reinforced throughout the curriculum.

Developing skills beyond subject knowledge
Biomedical scientists rarely encounter laboratory findings in isolation. Results must be interpreted alongside reference ranges, symptoms, clinical histories and other investigative data to understand their relevance to diagnosis, monitoring and patient care.
Across the Smart Worksheet Library, students practise making these connections. The worksheets ask them to interpret laboratory results, relate biomarkers to symptomatology and underlying pathophysiology, and consider how clinical histories can guide further testing. They also work through calculations that may be automated in professional laboratories, helping them understand the variables and scientific principles behind technical processes rather than treating the final result as a given.
These activities support the knowledge, skills and professional competencies reflected within Quality Assurance Agency Subject Benchmark Statement for Biomedical Science, and the expectations of IBMS-accredited programmes. They can also support broader biomedical and healthcare science teaching where educators want to strengthen the connection between scientific theory and professional application.

The new Smart Worksheets have been designed to fit a range of teaching approaches. Educators can use them before practical sessions, during lectures and workshops, within flipped learning approaches, for formative assessment, or as part of revision, independent study and placement preparation.
This flexibility allows skills development to be embedded across a programme rather than confined to a single module or placement experience. Educators can select activities that complement their existing teaching and provide additional applied practice without creating the same level of manual marking associated with traditional exercises.
For students, the ability to access activities at a suitable time and pace creates more opportunities to revisit challenging concepts. Immediate feedback helps learners identify misconceptions as they work, while repeated attempts allow them to refine their reasoning in a safe environment before encountering similar decisions in practical or professional settings.
