How new clinical immunology Smart Worksheets build diagnostic confidence

Connecting immunology theory with clinical practice

Diagnoses in areas such as allergy, autoimmune disease, immunodeficiency and monoclonal gammopathies are rarely based on a single result. Biomedical scientists must consider patterns across multiple investigations, recognise uncertainty and interpret findings alongside symptoms, treatment history and current clinical guidance.

The new Smart Worksheets allow students to practise this type of reasoning within structured, low-stakes activities. Rather than learning diagnostic techniques in isolation, students work with clinically contextualised data and consider how different forms of evidence contribute to the wider patient picture.

Developing interpretation and diagnostic reasoning


Within the identification, characterisation and diagnosis: monoclonal gammopathies Smart Worksheet, students interpret capillary zone electrophoresis and immunofixation data alongside patient histories and other laboratory findings. This helps them develop pattern recognition while considering the limitations of individual methods and the wider evidence required to investigate and monitor monoclonal gammopathies.

The allergy Smart Worksheet similarly introduces students to investigative approaches including skin prick and intradermal testing, oral food challenges, total and specific IgE testing, component-resolved diagnostics and mast cell tryptase assays. Students then apply these approaches within case studies addressing allergy progression and anaphylaxis.
