Foundation science educators face a unique and rewarding challenge. They empower diverse student cohorts, many of whom struggle with academic confidence, by addressing varying levels of prior knowledge and building self assurance for university-level study. These often include mature learners re-entering higher education, students with non-traditional qualifications needing to reinforce core knowledge, or those from backgrounds typically underrepresented in higher education. Providing the right guidance and support to reinforce essential knowledge, address skills gaps, and build self-assurance for university-level study is a complex but important task. These programmes offer a supportive transition, designed to set every student up for success in their next stage.

At LearnSci, we’ve spent the last year working closely with academics across more than 30 institutions, actively listening to their pressures and persistent challenges. This direct feedback has been the driving force behind the significant expansion of our Smart Worksheet Library. We’ve built a series of curriculum aligned, pedagogically sound, and academically responsive resources to help students grasp core science foundation concepts, develop problem solving strategies, and apply theory to practical contexts.

As well as our existing resources, our expanded offering now includes more Smart Worksheets targeted to foundation science and scientific literacy, including:

  • COSHH risk assessment" guides students through the different sections of a COSHH form providing support on the appropriate way to complete a risk assessment.
  • Calculating instrument error” supports student calculation and reporting of percent error in single and cumulative measurements, and evaluating the reliability of experimental results.
  • Stoichometery: balancing chemical reactions” provides tools for practice and mastery of balancing chemical reactions, from simple, to more complex and difficult cases.
  • Quantitative skills for pharmacy and quantitative skills for forensic science each consist of 5 Smart Worksheets that support students on fundamental numeracy concepts, units and unit conversions, data visualisation and graphing, key scientific formulae, and averages, spread and precision, entrenched in scenarios related to their discipline.
  • The numeracy and quantitative skills pathway has been expanded to support a better appreciation of statistical methods. New Smart Worksheets have been added covering statistical tests for comparing groups, t-tests, non-parametric tests and ANOVA analysis.
We found that students who don’t have great maths skills really struggled. Students find it daunting to go to a member of staff with a calculation that doesn’t work. The great thing about Smart Worksheets is that it tells you at every point whether you’ve got it right or wrong, what might be wrong and how you might go about changing it. The students found that really valuable. In their exam, we found that the average mark in the maths questions rose from 59% to 79%, which made a really big difference to the student outcome.

Empowering your teaching and enhancing student learning

Our Smart Worksheets are designed to provide consistent, high-quality, and interactive learning experiences at scale, giving every student the support they need to succeed, regardless of their starting point. With autograding and immediate, scaffolded feedback, students can work independently to build confidence, reinforce score scientific knowledge, and close essential skills gaps. Using Smart Worksheets  also reduces repetitive marking for educators, freeing up your valuable time for more personalised support and impactful teaching. Built for flexible delivery, Smart Worksheets are inclusive and accessible by design, helping educators deliver consistent learning experiences across diverse cohorts.

By providing resources shaped by academic feedback and grounded in genuine practitioner needs, we can strengthen your teaching and improve both teaching and learning experiences.
