Haematology and transfusion science are core clinical disciplines within biomedical science. These clinical specialisms focus on the different elements that constitute blood and blood-forming organs in normal and diseased states, and the identification of blood group antigens and antibodies that ensure a safe supply of blood and blood components, playing a vital role in patient care.

Developing proficiency in haematology and transfusion science requires students to master a complex spectrum of laboratory techniques and interpretive skills. This includes microscopic analysis of blood cell morphology, the identification of haematological abnormalities, the interpretation of full blood counts and reference ranges, understanding the complexity of transfusion compatibility, plus the preparation, storage and use of blood components. These subjects are used in patient screening, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease, with the selection of appropriate blood components for transfusion and possible adverse effects directly impacting patient safety. There is a great deal for students to understand and learn.

Creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable to learn is crucial for putting understanding into practice. Resources that enable students to learn from their mistakes without risk of harm to patients help to consolidate knowledge and better prepare them for future clinical roles. Whether progressing to clinical laboratory placements or pursuing careers in diagnostic laboratories, transfusion services, or biomedical research, this interactive and scenario-based learning builds the confidence and skills essential for their future success.

To support this, the LearnSci team has developed a new collection of haematology and transfusion science Smart Worksheets in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS). Through realistic case-based tasks and applied problem-solving, these resources help students strengthen clinical reasoning, develop diagnostic skills, and gain confidence using a variety of learning scenarios.

What are the new biomedical additions to the Smart Worksheet Library?

The new Smart Worksheets have been designed to support the next generation of students who aspire to work in biomedical science fields. These new Smart Worksheets offer a unique learning experience by providing students with immediate, personalised feedback while promoting independent, self-directed practice.

What are the new haematology and transfusion science Smart Worksheets?

Haematology and transfusion science are combined into one of the six key clinical specialism areas found in IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes, aligned to the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement. Here at LearnSci, we have developed five new Smart Worksheets to complement your haematology and transfusion science syllabus.

These include:

  • Haematopoiesis
  • Haemostasis and quality control
  • Primary and secondary haemostasis
  • Haematological malignancies
  • Transfusion science

Why and how do our new resources align with IBMS requirements?

The clinical specialism Smart Worksheets have been co-designed in collaboration with subject matter experts from IBMS-accredited programmes and practicing HCPC-registered biomedical scientists. By working closely with a diverse group of academics and professionals, we’ve ensured that the content is not only accurate but also aligned with current diagnostic practices, data interpretation, and real-world laboratory procedures.

Each worksheet has undergone a thorough quality assurance process, including input from student reviewers and external academic colleagues from IBMS-accredited programmes and the Executive Head of Education at the IBMS. This rigorous review ensures that the content is relevant, reliable, and ready to support high-quality biomedical science education.

Are these resources right for your university?

If your university delivers an IBMS-accredited BSc Biomedical Science programme, these resources have been created with you - and your students - in mind. However, these Smart Worksheets are highly relevant across a wide range of degree programmes, and are mapped to key clinical specialisms which align with academic and professional standards throughout biomedical education.

This time of year is ideal for planning ahead. Whether you're refreshing your syllabus or refining existing modules, these worksheets offer an adaptable way to enrich your teaching. They’re particularly effective for supporting formative assessment, strengthening lab-based learning, and encouraging independent study.
