How did I learn about LearnSci?
I initially looked into LearnSci because my former university tutor moved to work with the company and I was curious about the work they do. I learned that all the LabSims and Smart Worksheets that made my life easier at the start of my undergrad, originated from here.
LearnSci is a company that looks to address aspects of education that are difficult at university scale without a significant overhaul, such as lack of feedback, and aims to improve the student learning experience. This aligned with personal goals of mine as throughout my degree, I made it a point to be involved in areas that would support incoming students, such as SSLC or BioSoc, because I always worked towards being the person I wanted to have at the start of my degree. An internship with LearnSci seemed like an incredible opportunity to work towards that in a greater way.
What did I achieve during my internship?
I worked on four main tasks throughout my time here: working through a range of Smart Worksheets as a student user would to provide feedback, thorough testing of interactive components which can be found within sheets, researching how various AI software approaches different questions, as well as data analytics.
Data analytics was the main part of my internship. I assessed extracted data of student scores in worksheets, summarising the information while identifying areas students were struggling and suggesting improvements. A good portion of my recommendations were implemented during my time here and I was able to visually see the impact of my work. My hope is that these changes will be beneficial for the next cohort of students accessing the sheets and will support their learning.
What was it like working alongside the LearnSci team?
It was honestly so lovely. Everyone I had met and worked with was incredibly welcoming and friendly. I felt really integrated into the team quite early on and that my voice had value. This was an experience that developed my confidence, my analytical skills and demonstrated to me what a supportive professional work environment is. I feel very lucky to have had the chance to work with the LearnSci team and be part of the work they do.
