This time of year is one of the busiest in the academic calendar. As many head into exam season, educators are wrapping up teaching, marking assessments, prepping for and navigating exam and mitigation boards, and somehow also finding the capacity to think about and plan for the next academic cycle. In the science subjects, planning is even more complex; balancing lectures, workshops, tutorials, lab sessions, research projects and evolving student expectations.

Here at LearnSci, we have been working hard to expand our Smart Worksheet Library with this complexity in mind. We are also critically aware of the current challenges across the higher education sector with efficiency savings at the forefront of much strategic planning. Adding to this, the next cohort of students are likely to have different learning capital and expectations, particularly concerning asynchronous learning opportunities and therefore digital resources and support.

In an exciting collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) who are the professional body for biomedical science in the UK, we’ve created a suite of biomedical science Smart Worksheets. These will offer bespoke clinical content to be embedded in  teaching and learning to support educators, and increase the opportunity for effective and authentic learning experiences for students.

What are the new biomedical science additions to the Smart Worksheet Library?

The new Smart Worksheets have been designed to support the next generation of students who aspire to work in biomedical fields. These new Smart Worksheets offer a unique learning experience by providing students with immediate, personalised feedback while promoting independent, self-directed practice.

Eventually covering all six of the clinical specialisms required in IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes and aligned with the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement, this collection will support students in building confidence and competence in core biomedical science topics.

These include:

  • Clinical genetics
  • Clinical biochemistry
  • Haematology and transfusion science
  • Cellular pathology
  • Medical microbiology
  • Clinical immunology

How can the Smart Worksheets benefit your students?

The biomedical science Smart Worksheets are designed to help students explore key concepts in a real-world, clinical pathology laboratory context. By focusing on patient diagnostics, data interpretation, and critical thinking, the worksheets create an engaging, scenario-based learning environment that bridges the gap between lecture content, practical laboratory experience and real world pathology laboratories. The interactive format supports independent explorative learning using authentic data sets, clinical contexts and immediate, personalised feedback.

Why and how do our new resources align with IBMS?

The clinical Smart Worksheets have been co-designed in collaboration with subject matter experts from IBMS-accredited programmes and practising HCPC-registered biomedical scientists. By working closely with a diverse group of academics and professionals, we’ve ensured that the content is not only accurate but also aligned with current diagnostic practices, data interpretation, and real-world laboratory procedures.

The content of each worksheet has undergone a thorough quality assurance process, including input from student reviewers, external academic colleagues from IBMS-accredited programmes and the Executive Head of Education at the IBMS. This rigorous review ensures that the content is relevant, reliable, and ready to support high-quality biomedical science education.

Are these resources right for your university?

Whether your university offers an IBMS-accredited biomedical science programme or not, these resources have been designed to support effective clinical laboratory and diagnostic skills teaching across a wide range of courses.

The biomedical science Smart Worksheets are mapped to key clinical specialisms and aligned with both academic expectations and professional standards, making them a valuable addition to any biomedical science curriculum.

This time of year is ideal for planning ahead. Whether you’re refreshing your syllabus or refining existing modules, these adaptable worksheets can enrich your teaching. They’re especially useful for formative assessment, supporting lab-based learning, data analysis and promoting independent study.
